A Divine Comedy super-fan partnered up with the UK’s largest coach operator to surprise travellers with performances of ‘National Express’ and other ‘90s hits at Birmingham Coach Station today to celebrate the band coming to the coach company’s home city.

Birmingham-born musician, Elaine O’Connor had customers and National Express staff singing along to the catchy number ahead of the band’s evening gig at the nearby O2 Institute Birmingham.

Chris Hardy, Managing Director of National Express Coach UK, said: “’National Express’ was a huge hit in the ‘90s and remains a popular song to this day. Elaine did a fantastic job getting our customers in the Friday feeling today.

“There’s not a day that goes by when the song isn’t mentioned to us so when we found out that Divine Comedy were coming to the home of National Express, we knew we had to celebrate in style.”  

Arguably Divine Comedy’s biggest hit, ‘National Express’ hit the charts 20 years ago making it into the top 10.

44-year-old Elaine, who is a solicitor by day, said: “I have been a huge fan of Divine Comedy since my student days in the ‘90s. I remember the very first time I saw them when they performed in Leeds with a live orchestra. I was hooked from then.

“I’ve seen them perform live seven times. The most recent was last weekend in Dublin, they were amazing.

“They are my favourite band so it is was an honour to work with National Express to celebrate them coming to my home-town.”
